Azores


The Regional Network of Museums in the Azores consists of eight museums, curated by the Presidency of the Azores Regional Government / Regional Board of Culture which, when considered together, express the diversity of regional culture.

With different histories and setting up processes, the eight museums are distributed on eight of the nine islands of the archipelago: Santa Maria Museum, on Santa Maria; Carlos Machado Museum, on São Miguel; Angra do Heroísmo Museum, on Terceira; Graciosa Museum, on graciosa; Francisco de Lacerda Museum, on São Jorge; Pico Museum, on Pico; Horta Museum, on Faial; Flores Museum, on Flores.

With competencies at the level of “collecting, conserving and exhibiting material testaments and immaterial goods of man and his environment, for the purpose of studying, conserving, educating and recreation,” established in the regulatory document for the general regime of the museum network, the Regional Regulatory Decree n.º 13/2001/A, of the 7 of November, the museums are grouped together in Regional Museums “when they include cultural heritage existing in the Region independent of its origin” (Carlos Machado Museum, Angra do Heroísmo Museum, Pico Museum and Horta Museum) and Island Museums “when they preferably bring together aspects representative of social, economic and cultural activities of the island where they are located” (Santa Maria, Graciosa, Francisco de Lacerda and Flores Museums).
