The Museum
The construction of the Fort was probably commenced in the early 17th century by Jerónimo Jorge who in Funchal carried out works on the city walls. The works were probably carried out between 1614 and 1637. In 1654 it was redesigned with three levels of esplanades, with its own artillery, joining in the east the structure of defensive walls of the city of Funchal.. In the mid-18th century it underwent major works under the orders of the governor, José Correia de Sá, carried out by the engineer Francisco de Alincourt or by Tossi Columbina. An inscription can be seen dated 1767 on one of the gates of the Fort. It took its final shape, which subsequent works would not greatly alter, such as the construction of the small Governor's house in the mid-19th century.
With the Napoleonic wars, the fort was used as quarters by the English troops under the command of Colonel Henry Clinton. In 1901 the Fort was visited by King Carlos I of Portugal, being then barracks of the Battery of Movable Artillery.
In 1992 São Tiago Fort was handed over to the Autonomous Region of Madeira and the Museu de Arte Contemporânea do Funchal was housed there.
The basis of the collection is the works of art acquired at the time of the City of Funchal prize in 1966 and 1967 and then kept at the Museu Quinta das Cruzes.
Part of the collection was presented in the eighties as a Contemporary Art Nucleus at Quinta Magnólia, having subsequently been moved to São Tiago Fort in 1992.
The collection includes works by some of the major Portuguese artists of the 1960's such as Joaquim Rodrigo, Helena Almeida, Jorge Martins, José Escada, António Areal, Nuno de Siqueira, Manuel Baptista and Artur Rosa.
From the 1990's purchasing policy was continued with the addition of works by Vieira da Silva, Álvaro Lapa, Lourdes de Castro, René Bertholo, Ilda David, Graça Pereira Coutinho, António Palolo, João Queiroz, José Loureiro, Fernando Calhau, Michael Biberstein, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Pedro Portugal, Sofia Areal, Pedro Calapez, Rui Sanches, Miguel Branco, Pedro Proença, Fernanda Fragateiro, Pedro Casqueiro, Manuel Rosa, Rui Chafes, João Vilhena, Alberto Carneiro, Gaëtan, Eduardo Batarda, Daniel Blaufuks, José Pedro Croft, Ana Vidigal, Ana Hatherly, Pedro Gomes, Bárbara Assis Pacheco, Susanne Themlitz, etc.
The Museum also has a collection of works by contemporary Madeiran artists in action between the 1980's and 1990's, though without neglecting current production.
The Museum has presented exhibitions rotating their collections or projects in partnership with various national cultural institutes, as well as the presentation of retrospective or anthological exhibitions by various artists such as Paula Rego, Alberto Carneiro, Pedro Casqueiro, Gilberto Reis, Sofia Areal, Ana Vidigal, Pedro Gomes, Gaëtan, Julião Sarmento, etc.
