Interior Graciosa Museum
The Museum
Graciosa Museum was opened in 1983 with a programme based on ethnography. Spaces were set up to illustrate rural houses from Graciosa and the activities which marked the socio-economic activities on the island in the past: the cultivation of wine and cereal. In 1991 the museum expanded its geographical expression and took on a poli-nuclear nature. It was in this context that, during the 1990s, other nuclei were created: the Boathouse for Santa Cruz Whaling Boats, the Maritime Nucleus, the Windmill, the Blacksmith’s Tent and the House of Threshing Machines.

The heritage of the museum’s six nuclei is vast and consists of a diverse range of collections from the 15th century to the present day. The collections are essentially themed ethnographically, with a strong focus on traditional activities of the island connected to agriculture, vineyards, cereal milling, domestic equipment, old offices and whaling. There also collections of coins, postcards, photographs, newspapers, various documents referring to the island of Graciosa, clothing, armoury and investitures in the museum.
