The Museum
At the end of the 1970s a group of citizens from Calheta and Ribeira Seca took the initiative of organising na ethnographic exhibition and brought together collections of weaving, furniture and agricultural equipment for this purpose. After the Regional Government acquired a building facing the sea in the town of Calheta, whose construction had been ordered by Father Francisco de Azevedo Machado Neto, a commission was set up to form the Ethnographic House of São Jorge with the aforementioned collections The Ethnographic House was later converted into an island museum and the museum was inaugurated in 1991.

The collections housed in the museum are above all of an ethnographic nature and date from the 19th and 20th centuries, while covering the following themes: ceramics, textiles/weaving, farming, cattle breeding, furniture and photography.
