The Museum
Fitting into the category of regional museum, Pico Museum includes the Whaling Museum in the town of Lajes, the Whaling Industry Museum in São Roque and the Wine Museum in Madalena.
The Whaling Museum, which is set up in three boathouses, was opened in 1988. The collections are essentially made up of ethnographic objects representative of whale hunting and its history. To be found in great number and of great artistic expression are the pieces of scrimshaw. There is also a large collection of books, which are mostly related to whale hunting and make up part of the library.
The Whaling Industry Museum was opened in 1994. Set up in a former sperm whale transformation factory, the museum is, from the point of view of its main collection, a museum of industrial Archeology – made up of the assets of the former factory: industrial machinery involved in the transformation and treatment of products extracted from marine mammals: flours, oils and fertilisers. The museum also has a small collection of photographs related to the whaling activity and the Port in São Roque.
The Wine Museum, set up in the Carmo Convent, was opened in 2003. Its main collection is ethnographic, representing various moments in the cycle of wine production and of the social conviviality involved.
