The Museum
Flores Museum is a poli-nuclear structure. Its origins are based in the Casa Etnográfica da Ilha das Flores, created in 1977. In 1979 one of the oldest buildngs in Santa Cruz was acquired, the Casa Pimental Mesquita, where there is a collection of furniture from the 18th to 20th century, which was mostly produced locally. In 1993 the São Boaventura Convent, a building from the 17th century, received th collections concerning maritime and cattle-raising activities. In 2003 the Regional Government took possession of the Whaling Factory in Boqueirão, an industrial building from the 1940s which will shortly become Flores Museum’s centre dedicated to whaling.
The collections are essentially ethnographic and cover the 18th to 20th centuries. They document the lives of the Florentines and their relations with the sea and land. Also significant are the scrimshaw and nautical instruments collections. Represented is the entire range of implements related to the cultivation of the land and treatment of agricultural production. Also important is the collection of utensils connected to various trades, with special mention going to carpentry and ironwork. The spinning and weaving of linen and wool are demonstrated in the collection of textiles, locally woven from these natural fibres.
